Food Banks Canada, in their 2023 Hunger Count Report, says there has been a 32.1 per cent increase in food bank visits in Canada compared to last year. In Saskatchewan there was a 24.3 per cent increase since last year but an almost 50 per cent increase since 2019.
In this province more than 28 per cent of food bank recipients are children and single parent families make up 25.5 per cent of those using food banks while 41 per cent are single people and almost three quarters of those accessing food banks are renters.
Nation-wide with 2,388 food banks reporting there were 1.9 million visits to food banks in 2023 and in total 3,820,925 meals and snacks were distributed.
