Austin Elliott (pictured) did all he could Saturday night in Brandon, but in the end the Saskatoon Blades’ goaltender couldn’t prevent a third consecutive loss for the Bridge City Bunch, 2-1 to the Wheat Kings.
The 19-year-old Strathmore, Alberta, product stopped 40 of 42 shots, 18 of 20 in the first period as the Wheaties came out hot and firing in front of over 4,800 fans. Quinn Mantei and Roger McQueen scored for Brandon, now 7-6-3 for the season, in the latter stages of the first frame, after which Elliott shut them down. But, his Blue and Gold team-mates couldn’t solve Carson Bjarnason in goal for Brandon until 13 seconds were left when captain Trevor Wong tallied with Elliott on the bench for an extra attacker. The result drops Saskatoon to 8-5-0 for the season and on a three-game losing streak. Another loss for the Bridge City Bunch was right winger Egor Sidorov being helped off the ice with 30 seconds left in the game after colliding with team-mate Lukas Hansen in the Blue and Gold end of the ice. Sidorov couldn’t put any weight on his left leg and it remains to be seen how severe the injury is and how long he’ll be sidelined for.
