Another step was taken Tuesday towards the implementation of a new provincial police force when the Police (Miscellaneous) Amendment Act, 2023 was introduced in the Saskatchewan Legislature.
The idea of a Saskatchewan Marshals Service (SMS) was first announced in 2022 with the expectation that it will be operational in 2026 following introduction of the legislation. The SMS, consisting of 70 officers at an annual cost of $20 million, will be deployed primarily in rural and remote areas with high crime rates, along with tackling issues including gangs and illegal weapons. The service will also be utilized with finding and arresting criminals who are wanted on warrants, and provide support to other police forces operating in the province.
