To improve access to justice across the province, the Government of Saskatchewan has increased the monetary limit for claims that can proceed before the Small Claims Court from $30,000 to $50,000.

The Regulations, which take effect on April 1st, will make Saskatchewan’s small claims limit the second highest in Canada.

Minister and Attorney General, Bronwyn Eyre says pursuing matters through Provincial Court provides a more user-friendly, cost-effective way to resolve matters, often without the need to hire a lawyer. There are also more Provincial Courts operating in communities across the province, so applicants have increased options and reduced travel.

Plaintiffs with claims under the new limit can still bring their matter before the Court of King’s Bench. If a claim exceeds the limit, plaintiffs also have the option to waive the excess amount and proceed through Small Claims Court.

The small claims limit was last increased in 2016 after a Ministry of Justice review of the process.
