Temporarily getting rid of the provincial gas tax would cut costs and save Saskatchewan families 15 cents per litre, which is more than the 14 cent carbon tax. That, from the Official Opposition which is calling on the provincial government to suspend the gas tax to lower costs during the affordability crisis, immediately putting money back into people’s pockets. NDP Leader Carla Beck says, “This government’s first priority should be ensuring hardworking people can fill the tank, stock the fridge and put gifts under the tree without finding another job. Now is not the time for a million-dollar junket to Dubai.”
Notice has been given that the NDP will be introducing a private member’s motion on Thursday that the Sask Party government temporarily remove the provincial fuel tax from gasoline and diesel. Beck notes that suspending the gas tax for six months would decrease revenues by $225 million, but would save households about $356 million, while commercial and industrial customers would see about $150 million in savings.
