Question Period held true to its name this morning (Thur) in the Saskatchewan Legislature. There were many questions on both sides of the Chamber but not many direct answers. It began with Official Opposition Leader Carla Beck noting that new legislation was introduced with protections for human trafficking victims when it was just a week ago that the Sask Party MLA from Cutknife-Turtleford was caught in a human trafficking sting. She asked what kind of message that sends to Saskatchewan women.
Premier Scott Moe responded that within an hour of finding out, the member was ousted from caucus and then Moe turned to the protest on Monday which interrupted Question Period, leading to about a 40 minute delay in proceedings. He said Government caucus recently learned that on November 14th the Opposition hosted protest organizers and he wondered why the NDP hadn’t told the media that.
Beck suggested the government is “desperate to change the channel”. She brought up an MLA who owns a motel whose prices were jacked up when Social Services was paying the bill. Beck explains that Social Services paid $172,000 to Gary Grewal’s Sunrise Motel in Regina last year. The NDP would like the Provincial Auditor to investigate, and wants the government specifically request it be done. Premier Moe says the Auditor is free to investigate whatever they want.
