Prince Albert Grand Council is looking for federal support for the construction of a new northern campus in Prince Albert for the First Nations University of Canada.
The twelve Chiefs of the PAGC say in a news release this is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Indigenous education and advance community development in central and northern Saskatchewan.
With a revised funding bid of $25 million from Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, the First Nations University has committed $8.35 million from its reserves, secured an almost $11 million mortgage and is aiming for a $5.5 million fundraising target.
The City of Prince Albert is providing a five-acre plot of land for a dollar.
Grand Chief Brain Hardlotte suggest securing funding for a new northern campus goes beyond infrastructure.
He says, “It is a commitment to the future of Indigenous education, reconciliation and our collective future.”
The current northern campus is on Central Avenue in Prince Albert.
