RECAP FOR MONDAY, DECEMBER 4TH, 2023
Another weekend has come and gone for Huskie Athletics with all teams and sports in action. There were many highlights across the weekend from the Toque and Mitt toss at Volleyball and Hockey games and Women’s Basketball improving their perfect record against Winnipeg.

HUSKIES MEN’S HOCKEY RECAP:
The Men’s team welcomed Mount Royal into the Bridge City for a weekend series that didn’t exactly pan out for the Huskies. Friday night’s contest seen the Cougars open the scoring 17 seconds into the game thanks to the top scorer in the league, Connor Bouchard. The Huskies would respond with a power-play marker but would struggle in all areas of the ice including five-on-five. Mount Royal would score two more goals sealing it at 3-1.
Saturday night started off much better for the Huskies, as they scored the first goal on the power-play from Chantz Petruic which seen the ice littered with toque and mitts for the annual event. The second period however would see Mount Royal score five answered goals to take a commanding lead into the third. The Dogs would find the back of the net three times in the final frame, but they would fall short of a comeback attempt with Mount Royal taking the game 7-4 and sweeping the weekend series.

HUSKIES WOMEN’S HOCKEY RECAP:
The Women’s team would travel into Calgary to take on Mount Royal this weekend in a battle between two of the top four teams in the conference. Friday night the teams traded goals back and fourth until Sophie Lalor broke the 2-2 tie late in the second. Lalor would add another in the third as well as captain Kennedy Brown, starting off the weekend with a 5-2 win. Goaltender Camryn Drever turned aside 29 of 31 shots in the game.
Saturday night was a bit of a different story, as Mount Royal would give the Huskies a taste of their own medicine. The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but defensemen Jacquelyn Chief would cut the lead in half to start the second. Penalty troubles would plague the Huskies shortly after as Mount Royal would score three unanswered, the first two coming on the man advantage. Sara Kendell would grab a late power-play marker making it a 5-2 game for the Cougars as they grabbed the split in the weekend series.

HUSKIES MEN’S BASKETBALL RECAP:
Men’s Basketball had themselves a successful weekend, sweeping their weekend series against the Wesmen in Winnipeg. Starting off on Friday the Huskies upset Winnipeg with a slim 56-49 victory with Emmanuel Bonsu leading the way in points for the Dogs with 10. Chan De Ciman, Easton Thimm, and Ryker Wuttke all had 8 points on the night for the Huskies.
Saturday saw another upset as the Huskies walked away with another slim victory, 72-69. Emmanuel Bonsu led the way again in points, this time with 15 while Kymahni and Alexander Dewar had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Winnipeg came into the weekend in a three-way tie for third place in the conference, but now with back-to-back losses find themselves in a two-way tie for fourth place. Back-to-back wins for the Dogs pulls them into the Top 8 of the Canada West Conference heading into their break.

HUSKIES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RECAP:
The Women’s Basketball team, just like the Men’s team, had a very successful weekend in Winnipeg as they swept their two-game series against the Wesmen and improved their record to a perfect 10-and-0. Friday night was a dominant performance for the Dogs as they defeated Winnipeg 89-40 and held the Wesmen to 9 points or under in final three quarters. Tea DeMong led the way with 23 points on the evening with Gaige Grassick not far behind with 21.
Saturday night was an even better performance for the Huskies as they hit triple digits in another dominant performance, winning 101-34. The Dogs held Winnipeg to 9 and 4 points in the first two quarters and held them to 10 and 11 in the final two quarters. Carly Ahlstrom had a solid night on the court, leading the Huskies in scoring with 19 and Gaige Grassick had another solid game putting up 14 along with Maya Flindall.

HUSKIES MEN’S VOLLEYBALL RECAP:
It was a powerhouse matchup at The PAC this weekend between the Huskies and Winnipeg Wesmen. The teams split the weekend series, starting with the Toque and Mitt toss on Friday evening that seen the court littered with winter clothing. The Huskies defeated Winnipeg in four sets (3-1) followed by a Winnipeg victory on Saturday in four sets as well (3-1).

HUSKIES WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL RECAP:
Women’s Volleyball struggled this weekend at The PAC, only grabbing three set victories all weekend long against Winnipeg. Friday evening was their best game of the weekend as they clawed all the way back to force a fifth set after falling down 2-0. Winnipeg took the fifth and deciding set 15-7 and rode the momentum into Saturday jumping to a quick 2-0 lead early. The Huskies would win the third set in hopes of another comeback, but fell short in the fourth set 25-9 and Winnipeg sweeping the weekend series.
