It was 34 years ago today, on December 6th of 1989 that 14 women were brutally gunned down by a shooter at École Polytechnique de Montréal. The shooter said he was “fighting feminism”.
Two years later, December 6th became officially recognized as a National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women. According to the website “Canadian Women dot org”, in 2022, 184 women and girls were violently killed and one woman or girl is killed every 48 hours.
The flags in Saskatoon’s Civic Square are being lowered in remembrance of the 14 women who were killed in Montreal and to honour all victims of gender-based violence.
If you see people with moose hide pins, they demonstrate a commitment to honour, respect and protect women and girls through the national Moose Hide Campaign. Everyone who wears a pin is urged to tell five others what it signifies.
