Pharmacy care is being taken to the next level in Saskatchewan through a pilot project in Swift Current. An agreement between a pharmacy and two doctors from a local clinic means the doctors’ patients will be able to seek care for management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), underactive thyroid and Warfarin medication management from the pharmacy. As well, an agreement with a psychiatrist means his patients will be able to seek care for mental health management and support from the pharmacy.

Health Minister Everett Hindley says the agreements in this one year pilot project will optimize pharmacists’ skills, build capacity in the health care system and improve patient access to care. An evaluation of the project will help to inform potential opportunities for expansion to additional locations and for other chronic conditions.
