Attendees at a free Saskatchewan SPCA webinar on PRIDE in animal welfare were given tips on how to be an ally and create a safe environment for staff and clients at veterinary clinics, shelters, rescues, and in general for any business or organization.
One of the speakers, Saskatoon veterinarian, Dr. Rebecca Mycock, says she didn’t feel comfortable coming out until she was an adult. Her biggest tip for an inclusive workplace and in general, is to not assume someone’s sexuality and ask what pronouns they prefer. As well, add your own preferred pronouns to your email signature. She says, “When someone feels like their pronouns are being respected, you are being respectful of all aspects of things, that just makes people feel more comfortable and makes them more willing to walk through the door and keep coming back.”
Her wish for the future, not just in animal welfare but across the board, is that it will become more normalized for people not to make assumptions about sexualities and gender identities. The webinar is available on the Saskatchewan SPCA’s YouTube channel.
