Correctional Service Canada says an inmate at the Regional Psychiatric Centre, died while in custody of apparent natural causes.
At the time of death, CSC says the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which commenced on July 27, 2023 for second degree murder and indignity to a dead body.
The inmate’s next of kin have been notified. Joseph Thauberger was 80 years old. This past July he was convicted of killing his brother Patrick Thauberger in 1997 over a dispute involving the sale of farmland. Patrick Thauberger’s remains were discovered in a rural area in 2020.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
