Health Canada has approved a vaccine for Respiratory Synctial Virus, or RSV, for babies and older adults. A news release from Pfizer describes RSV as a common respiratory virus that causes mild disease with cold-like symptoms, but in more vulnerable populations, like adults 60 and over it can be severe. For infants, RSV infection can result in respiratory distress, especially in those under six months old.
Pfizer says pregnant women can get the vaccine and that will pass on immunity protection to their babies. Pfizer is currently assessing when the vaccine will be available to Canadians.
