The Prince Albert Grand Council is calling for a transparent investigation into the death of 23-year-old Tatiana Custer, a mother of a five-year-old, who died in custody at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre on January 3rd. Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte believes there has been a lack of communication with her family from Correctional Service Canada and Prince Albert Police Services’ Victim Services. The family told the PAGC that they had to do all the reaching out to call the coroner and the hospital to find out more information and what they needed was someone to tell them what happens next and what kind of process would be happening with an investigation.
A news release from the province following Custer’s death stated she was found unresponsive in a common area over the noon hour and staff initiated life saving measures and called EMS. She was later declared dead. No foul play was suspected. The Prince Albert Police Service and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service are investigating and the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety are conducting an internal investigation.
