Moon Time Connections and United Way of Saskatoon and area, both of which are long-time distributors of free period products in the province, welcome the government’s announcement last fall that it would be partnering with the Shoppers Foundation to distribute 12 million menstruation products to schools, emergency shelters and food banks over the next three years.
However, Andrea Howe , says 12 million is a significant increase in the supply of free products, but the reality is more is needed.
Andrea Howe from United Way of Saskatoon explains that the Saskatoon Food Bank on its own serves 24,000 clients a month and if even half of those need period products monthly, most of the annual donation from the Foundation will have been consumed.
Moon Time and the United Way can now focus their efforts on people who wouldn’t otherwise be reached by the government and Shoppers Foundation.
Moon Time Connections and the United Way of Saskatoon will continue their annual campaigns – included Tampon Tuesday, which is a partnership with local Shopper’s Drug Marts and Labour groups.
Founder of Moon Time Connections, Nicole White, says people in every part of the province need these products and they will continue their work, complementing the efforts of the partnership between the provincial government and the Shoppers Foundation.
Moon Time Connections works with high schools, health care centres, women’s shelters, and community programs to ensure menstruation products are accessible for northern communities.
