Prince Albert Police responded early Thursday morning around 6 to a complaint about a gun shot and an injury in the 500 block of 12th Street Northwest. Officers were told a 14-year-old was injured while handling a firearm. The youth fled with a sawed-off shotgun before police arrived. Investigators were told the youth arrived at the home in the night with the gun and during an attempt to load the prohibited weapon, it discharged, resulting in a minor injury.
A news release from the Prince Albert Police says Patrol and Canine members began to search, but then learned the youth had been picked up by a vehicle and taken to the hospital. The 14-year-old was taken into custody after being treated for the injury. The firearm-related charges include reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.
The weapon was found in the 1200 block of 5th Avenue Northwest on the roof of a building, and it was recovered with the help of the Prince Albert Fire Department.
