The Government of Saskatchewan is applying to intervene in the appeal to the federal firearms ban. The original challenges were heard last April, but were dismissed in October.
Four of the applicants, including the Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights, filed appeals. Justice Minister and Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre believes the ban directly conflicts with the Criminal Code which states that firearms can be reasonably used for hunting or sporting purposes cannot be banned. Public Safety Minister Paul Merriman suggests the ban unfairly targets law-abiding firearms owners and he believes it will have little impact on firearms-related crime.
The federal government has said the ban is to keep assault-style firearms out of the hands of Canadians.
