Saskatoon City Council will be discussing potential new changes to the Cannabis Business License Bylaw, after being approved to do so by the Standing Policy Committee on Planning, Development and Community Services.
Matt Grazier, City Director of Community Standards, says administration is recommending amending the bylaw to remove regulations for cannabis retail stores that are already addressed by other orders of government. These relate to window coverings, the number of employees required in the store, the age of persons working at or visiting the store, and consumption of cannabis. The amendment would require that section to be replaced with a statement that businesses must comply with all provincial and federal regulations pertaining to cannabis.
Administration is also recommending that signs at cannabis related businesses be allowed to display more than just the business name. This would most likely open the door to include images of cannabis leaves, as any image that appeals to children or glamourizes cannabis is prohibited.
Engagement with cannabis retail stores was conducted in October of last year. Administration’s reports says that businesses were mostly in agreement with the removal of these regulations, citing duplication and possible confusion with regulations from other orders of government.
