Tonight (Fri) is Chinese New Year’s Eve, or Lunar New Year’s Eve, so thanks to a change in the City of Saskatoon’s bylaws, you may see some fireworks tonight (Fri).
At a City Council meeting last September, a fire safety bylaw was amended to permit residents setting off low hazard fireworks in recognition of the Lunar New Year. In the past, the only other allowable nights were New Year’s Eve, Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day. Now, they are also allowed on the third day of the annual five-day Diwali Festival and Chinese New Year’s Eve.
Low-hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use and the high-hazard fireworks are for professionals. The advice from the Fire Department is to choose your location wisely, making sure you have enough room for the space requirements and there is nothing overhead and you are a safe distance from combustible materials. Fireworks can only be discharged on private property.
