Bill C-64, which is the first phase of national universal pharmacare was introduced into Parliament today, which would cover diabetes and birth control medications and supplies. A news release from the federal government says the intent is to work with provinces and territories to provide universal, single-payer coverage. The Bill also provides the ability for the new Canadian Drug Agency to work towards the development of a national formulary and a national bulk purchasing strategy. Health Minister Mark Holland says, “Each and every Canadian should have access to the prescription drugs they need.”
Provincial NDP Health Critic, Vicki Mowat, says the Sask Party government needs to get to the table and ensure a deal that provides coverage for diabetes medication and contraceptives for everyone in our province.
