The theme this weekend for much of Saskatchewan is snow and blowing snow. How much depends on where you are. Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Warning which covers the south and parts of central Saskatchewan. Saskatoon is on the northern edge of this system and a bit further north, including Prince Albert, Meadow Lake and Melfort, it’s a Winter Storm Watch.
Meteorologist Brian Proctor says the hardest hit area will be the southeast, around Assiniboia, with 20 to 40 centimetres of snow Saturday through Sunday and 60 to 70 km/h wind gusts. He doesn’t expect there will be as much snow further north in the Saskatoon area, but it will still be significant with 10 to 20 centimetres in the same timeline, and windy, also with gusts up to 70 km/h. Proctor explains that a Colorado Low is coming from Montana and heading northeast.
For farmers, the further north in the system, the less chance of lots of moisture in the snow, but the further south and southeast, there is a better chance of picking up snow water equivalents.
Proctor advises if you have to do any travelling, plan ahead and leave earlier if you can, and otherwise check the forecast and the Highway Hotline before you go.
