Meewasin’s Pelican Watch contest is back for its 28th year, celebrating the return of the American White Pelican.
Through March 31st, on Meewasin’s website, you can submit your guess on the date and time the first pelican will land on the river between the CPR Bridge and the Saskatoon Weir.
An official pelican watcher will record the actuall date and time and the most accurate predictor wins.
Meewasin’s Resource Management Officer, Renny Grilz says, “People love to see the pelicans return to Saskatoon, because it’s one of the first signs of spring. They’re also a reminder that public education and engagement, supported by effective conservation efforts, can bring about real change.
He explains that the American White Pelican was the first species to be taken off the threatened species list back in 1987.
Canadian Tire, Outter Limits, Pizza Hut, Saskatoon Nature Society, and Wild Birds Unlimited are sponsoring this year’s contest.
