As the song goes, “Oh the good ole hockey game is the best game you can name” and your chance to watch some good ole hockey with NHL alumni is coming up Friday in Saskatoon at Merlis Belsher Place. The players are in town to help raise funds through Hockey Helps the Homeless.
There are tournaments across the country, but all funds raised stay in the home communities. Local chair of Hockey Helps the Homeless, Bob Fawcett, says the tournament is all day Friday at Merlis Belsher Place. Funds are raised by teams and groups raising money to play in the tournament. There is a dinner tonight (Thurs) where the team that raises the most money gets first draft pick of the NHL alumni.
Fawcett adds that their names will be on their jerseys so you will be able to pick them out. Some of the players taking part are Ray Bourque, Brian Skrudland. Matthew Barnaby, Rich and Ron Sutter and women’s hockey player and Olympian Fiona Smith-Bell.
The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Friday and continues until about 6. It’s free, but Fawcett urges everyone to bring along a non-perishable item for the Food Bank. All proceeds from this event go to the Friendship Inn, the YWCA’s women’s shelter and the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre.
