The group that calls itself Citizens Against SaskPower is back in Regina’s Court of King’s Bench Friday. This began in March of last year when the group asked the court to consider whether it is a violation of the Charter rights to life, liberty and personal security when SaskPower builds new gas generation plants, in light of climate change. The court order asks the Crown Corporation to develop a realistic plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.

The government has asked for a dismissal of the lawsuit.

Friday’s hearing will address whether the Saskatchewan Environmental Society should be granted status as an intervenor. If the application is approved, the SES intends to provide evidence on the impacts of the provincial government and SaskPower’s decisions have made on the environment, and achievable options on how net-zero greenhouse gas emissions can be reached.
