Maidstone RCMP didn’t perform an in-person wellness check on a man until 10 hours past the time it was requested, and now Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating, as the man died later that day.

On Wednesday at 7:14a.m., Maidstone RCMP received a call from a family member of a 68-year-old-man. The family member requested a wellness check for the man, living at a rural home northeast of Lloydminster, as they had heard that he was deceased. The RCMP officer did not perform the wellness check.

Later that day, at 4:30pm, RCMP received a second call, from the same family member, asking for an update on the wellness check. At 4:39 p.m., the originally dispatched member departed the Maidstone detachment. At 5:01 p.m., the RCMP received a call from another relative of the man, who had been to his house, reporting that he was seriously injured but alive.

Officers arrived shortly after, found the man with serious injuries, and he was transported to hospital where he later died.

SIRT was notified of the incident and will now investigate the Saskatchewan RCMP’s response to the initial request for the well-being check.

Saskatchewan RCMP will be conducting a separate internal investigation into this incident.
