The Government of Saskatchewan is making amendments to the Midwifery Regulations to allow those in the profession to prescribe and administer appropriate drugs, order x-rays where clinically appropriate and conduct newborn hearing screenings. The amendments were proposed by the Saskatchewan College of Midwives.

Health Minister Everett Hindley says the amendments allow midwives to do more, meaning more timely and accessible care. The provincial government says in a news release the amendment allows midwives to prescribe from a category of drugs, rather than from a specific list of drugs. Previously, when a new drug became available it would have to be added to the regulations before midwives could prescribe it. Midwives will have to have the necessary training and continual updating of their skills to ensure they are able to provide the expanded services.
