As birds return for the summer, some might show aggressive behavior while nesting.
This might include swooping over your head, and the odd bird might peck at smaller animals like cats or small dogs.
Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Executive Director Darrell Crabbe says right now, this behavior is likely seen in merlins and Cooper’s hawks.
“They will sometimes pick at a cat or a dog…but they certainly aren’t going to attack them or anything like that.”
Crabbe says this behavior only lasts for a small period of time.
“The eggs will have hatched by now. The birds will be in there, and they should be fledged out very quickly. As soon as they are, all this activity will quit.”
He added that, at this time of year, most birds have already nested, and the young have fledged the nest.
