After reviewing both the Estevan and Elbow regions as possible sites for the province’s first Small Modular Reactor facility, SaskPower has announced two potential sites in the Estevan area for further study. Those sites are located on the Boundary Dam Reservoir and one on the Rafferty Reservoir.
SaskPower says it examined technical suitability of the sites with the southeast location offering many benefits, including proximity to the City of Estevan to access existing services, a skilled workforce, accommodations and emergency services, as well as infrastructure, roads and transmission.
In a news release the Crown Corporation says it will now begin detailed site assessment of each potential site with a final site selection in 2025. In addition, SaskPower says it will continue to explore the Elbow area for potential future nuclear development. The final decision on a small modular reactor is expected in 2029.
