If approved by Saskatoon City Council, the Green Cart organics program will move to picking up the carts once a month in the winter, from December through March, and then back to every two weeks for the rest of the year. That’s the option that was chosen by the Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services Committee this morning (Tues). A report from Administration indicated that there wasn’t as much organic waste to collect during the colder months in the first year of this program. The other options were to keep things the same year-round, increase summer collection to once a week, or to reduce in the winter and increase the frequency in the summer.
The report also stated there was another option that wasn’t presented, and that was to eliminate collecting the green carts throughout the winter, but it wasn’t presented because food waste is created year-round. Waste audits indicated there is still a large amount of organic material that is being disposed of in the black carts instead of the green carts, so more public education needs to be done.
