Metis Nation-Saskatchewan has given the community of Île-à-la-Crosse $200,000 to develop a park and war veteran memorial at South Bay, a traditional Metis gathering place located near the lake.
Once the project is complete, the area will be known as The South Bay War Veterans’ Park, which aims to honour local war veterans for their service.
The memorial will have the names of 35 Métis Veterans inscribed on it, and additional names will be added as their involvement in the wars become known.
According to a news release, the planning process has engaged Elders, community members, students, and visitors.
