Over the course of 11 days last month the Saskatoon Police Service embarked on a crime disruption project that led to 117 arrests, and 182 new charges against 61 people.
There were 567 proactive calls for service responding to in-progress violent crime. In a news release police say their officers also seized 19 bladed weapons, 8 firearms, 7 cans of bear spray, and 8 blunt or assorted weapons, drugs, ammunition, stolen property, and illegal cigarettes.
Calling it a whole-of-city approach Chief Cameron McBride says they used a balanced approach of community engagement and strategic enforcement. “Developing and implementing focused enforcement plans will certainly help to address the increase in violent crime we have seen this year,” he stated.
The project, which took place between June 18th and 29th, was developed by the Criminal Investigations Division with the support of the Special Uniform Operations Division, redeployed resources from the Crime Reduction Team, Break and Enter Comprehensive Action Program, Guns and Gangs Unit, and Tactical Support Unit.
