The National Police Federation, the union which represents almost 20,000 RCMP members, has sent a letter to Premier Scott Moe, signed also by nearly 100 municipalities and organizations, calling for a pause to investment into the Saskatchewan Marshal Service. The letter calls for the government to instead prioritize investment into existing police resources.
NPF President and CEO, Brian Sauvé, acknowledges and applauds the recent funding commitment to the RCMP, but adds that $14 million has already been allocated to the Marshal Service for start-up costs without adequate consultation or engagement with the communities it intends to serve.
The letter lists issues around the proposal for the Marshal Service including the lack of consultation, concerning oversight, lack of integration with existing law enforcement agencies, unknown costs and staffing concerns, which the letter says raises serious doubts about the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of the SMS. The National Police Federation and all of the municipalities and public safety stakeholders who signed the document are calling on the government to release the full, comprehensive plan for the proposed Saskatchewan Marshal Service.
A news release from the NPF says without this information, it is impossible for municipal leaders or residents to make informed decisions about the future of policing in the province protecting their safety.
