The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency reports that as of 11 a.m. Friday there are 76 active wildfires in the province. Of those active fires, eight are categorized as not contained. To date, there have been 480 fires in the province. The SPSA says the Flanagan fire, less than 10 kilometres from Sandy Bay, is one of two fires impacting communities where residents have been asked to evacuate. The Flanagan fire also poses a risk to SaskPower’s Island Falls Hydroelectric Power Station after it breached containment lines August 4th and progressed toward the community.
A Type 1 Incident Management team has been deployed in response to the Flanagan fire as well as the Arm fire. That includes irrigation and sprinkler units, heavy equipment, helicopters, and air tanker support.
The Late fire is less than five kilometres from the community of Turnor Lake. The SPSA is working with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council in supporting the communities and their residents in that area. The Late fire started on July 10th and is not currently contained. The SPSA says it has been monitoring and suppressing the fire, creating fire guards in addition to helicopter and air tanker support.
