The largest show and shine event in Saskatchewan generated a large sum of police activity to match, as officers handed out over 80 tickets between Friday and Saturday.
Police conducted a high-profile presence on 8th Street, downtown, and in adjacent parking lots in which the car show took place.
As a result, officers also issued over 70 warnings, suspended four licenses, impounded two vehicles, and arrested four citizens.
Two of those arrested were a 17-year-old-boy and a 22-year-old man, both detained for assaulting officers.
On Saturday at 11:30pm, police stopped a vehicle that the Air Support Unit had observed stunting at the corner of 8th street and McCool Avenue. Police say while the traffic stop was taking place, a large group of people began to surround the officers.
A 17-year-old boy became combative with officers as they tried to disperse the crowd and ended up spitting on the Constable. Another 22-year-old male tried to knock equipment out of an officer’s hand. He tried to flee the scene but was quickly arrested.
Police Chief Cam McBride says this show and shine event has been an issue in the past.
“So much so, that we’ve brought additional staff up from Regina to assist with traffic control. It has become a concern with regard to racing, and just generally unsafe behavior in the vicinity of 8th Street.”
McBride is concerned, as this is the second incident where officers were swarmed by a large group of people in nearly one week.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday when a large group of youth in the Hampton Village neighborhood injured two officers.
However, McBride says he doesn’t expect this trend to continue.
“I don’t know that it is something I’d expect to continue, but the fact that we’ve had two in close proximity is very concerning to me. The wellbeing of our members is first and foremost on my mind.”
Police attended the show and shine to conduct a traffic stop after a vehicle was spotted stunting by the Ariel Support Unit at 11:30pm.
