The Moose Jaw Police Service is advising the public of a STARS Lottery phone scam circulating in the area.
The Police Service explains that a caller claims to represent STARS and tells the victim they have won a new vehicle or a cash prize, ranging from $30,000 to $350,000.
The fraudster falsely claims the victim has won and extravagant prize and asks them to send payment to claim it.
The Moose Jaw Police Service advises that you will never be asked to send money to claim a lottery prize.
If you are suspicious, check with STARS directly to verify if you are a winner.
In some instances, the fraudster demands gift cards to claim a prize and the same advice applies.
You don’t have to pay to win a lottery prize, so don’t give the scammer access codes for the cards.
Moose Jaw Police also reminds the public not to provide personal information such as your Social Insurance Number or banking details over the phone.
Call Moose Jaw Police if you are from that area and have been the victim of a scam.
