In another announcement leading up to the provincial election, the Leader of the NDP has committed to eliminating the provincial sales tax on groceries.
In a news release, Carla Beck stated that many facets of a nutritious school lunch or family dinner are impacted by the Sask. Party’s expanded grocery tax. These items include rotisserie chickens, pre-packaged salads, mixed and salted nuts, muffins, granola bars, certain juices and cheese and cracker platters.
Beck adds that removing the PST from groceries would save the average Saskatchewan family approximately $500 over four years.
The release also included that the Sask. Party raised the PST from five per cent to six per cent and expanded it to goods like groceries and children’s clothes.
The provincial NDP say “the amount of PST Saskatchewan families pay has increased by over 40% since Scott Moe came to power.”
