The Saskatoon Blades came within 34 seconds of their first 2024 W-H-L Pre-Season win in four tries Friday, only to drop a 5-4 shootout decision to the Raiders in Prince Albert.
Rowan Calvert’s second goal of the game, on a power play with 86 seconds remaining in the third period appeared to give the Bridge City Bunch a triumph in a spirited affair befitting the long-standing Blades-Raiders’ rivalry. But, Aiden Oiring’s partially-blocked shot went up and over Blue and G0ld goaltender Austin Elliott and into the net with 33.8 seconds left in regulation, coming with the P-A net empty and an extra attacker on the ice. Oiring and Riley Boychuk scored in the shootout as the Raiders improved to 3-1-0 in exhibition play while the Blades dropped to 0-3-1. Ben Riche and Willie James also found the back of the net for Saskatoon, who were out-shot 39-26. The Bridge City Bunch finish up their pre-season schedule Saturday when then they tangle with Prince Albert again, this time in Warman – beginning at 7 o’clock.
