The Canadian Taxpayers Federation questions the Saskatchewan NDP’s promises, saying there won’t be enough money to cover everything. Prairie Director of the CTF, Gage Haubrich, says Saskatchewan’s NDP Leader has promised to axe the provincial 15 cent a litre gas tax for at least six moths and Carla Beck has also promised not to hike any provincial taxes over the next four years, if elected to govern. He says it’s great news, but when combined with the NDP’s plan to increase government spending and balance the budget within four years, the calculations become more challenging.
Haubrich notes that the Sask Party government isn’t off the hook. Since 2015, the government has only balanced two out of its last ten budgets and at the same time has increased the provincial debt by more than $14 billion, wasting almost $4.7 billion on interest charges from that debt.
