To honour a duo from overseas for their efforts to eliminate the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, the Saskatoon Nutana Rotary Club is dedicating a brick to them in Peace Plaza Tuesday.
Each year, the Rotary Club holds a brick dedication ceremony to honour someone who has brought peace to the world in some way.
Asit Sarkar with the Rotary Foundation says this year’s chosen recipients are the Nobel Peace Prize Winners from 2018; Nadia Murad, who was taken from her home by ISIS and was sold into sexual slavery until she escaped, and Denis Mukwege, who founded the Panzi Hospital which support survivors of sexual assault.
“This one we thought is one that’s particularly important in these days. Various forms of violence against women are increasingly coming to people’s attention. That’s why we chose this one this year.”
Sarkar says Grade 8 students from St. Anne’s School will be conducting the program.
“We have been very happy to give the students a major role. They design the whole program. We just tell them that this year we are trying to bring to people’s attention this particular winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. After that, they take it on.”
Sarkar says the ceremony will take place Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Peace Plaza in Rotary Park.
