One of the world’s foremost art dealers and internationally renowned experts in Pablo Picasso prints, who is also a USask alumnus, has gifted three prints to add to the university’s collection of six Picasso pieces he donated in 2012. That makes the collection the largest university collection of Picasso linocuts. Dr. Frederick Mulder was raised in Eston. He earned his first degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1964 and has lived in England since 1968. Dr. Mulder says he has a very soft spot for Saskatchewan, and Saskatoon in particular.
The university isn’t the only place in Saskatoon you can see Picasso pieces. The Frank and Ellen Remai (ray me) Foundation donated 406 linocuts to the Remai Modern, making it the world’s most complete collection of Picasso’s works in this medium. Mulder says, “I quite like the fact that Saskatchewan is a slightly improbable place for a collection of this importance. I just think that’s rather cool.” In 2014, Mulder donated 23 Picasso works to the modern art gallery.
