It was the busiest weekend of the season so far for Huskie Athletics, with Football at home to undefeated Manitoba, both soccer teams at home and both hockey teams kicking off their respective 2024-25 Canada West seasons with the U-Prairie Challenge against Regina. Full recap below……

HUSKIES FOOTBALL:
Saskatchewan entered Friday’s game with a 2-and-3 record trying to climb back into the Canada West standings while Manitoba entered with a perfect 5-and-0 record, looking to make it six. From start to finish, it was a dominating performance for the Huskies as they generated 505 yards on offence, 212 of them passing on their way to a 42-24 victory. Anton Amundrud completed 23 of 28 attempts with two touchdowns on the night, while Ryker Frank was on fire once again rushing for 163 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The victory snapped the seventh-ranked Bisons undefeated start to the season and improved Saskatchewan’s record to 3-and-3 as they go into a bye-week before returning home for a clash against their prairie rivals, the Regina Rams.

HUSKIES WOMEN’S SOCCER:
Women’s Soccer had a solid bounce back weekend after going winless in their previous three games before the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, the Huskies clashed with the Calgary Dinos resulting in a 1-1 tie with the Huskies lone goal coming from Marie Kilcher, her fourth of the season. Saskatchewan had their chances leading 9-6 in shots by the end of the game. Sunday was another good performance with a much better result, a 7-0 win over Lethbridge thanks to three goals from Alyssa D’Agnone bringing her total on the season to eight. Cheyenne Lehmann had two goals and an assist in the victory as well. Saskatchewan had 21 shots Sunday afternoon compared to Lethbridge’s six.
The Huskies go right back to work next weekend with the U-Prairie Challenge against Regina starting Friday night at Griffiths Stadium before moving south to Regina Saturday night.

HUSKIES MEN’S SOCCER:
Men’s Soccer hit the field for one game this weekend against the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns as both teams battled extremely windy conditions, eventually drawing to a 0-0 tie. Saskatchewan may not have found the back of the net, but they had their chances leading the way with 10 shots while Lethbridge had three on the afternoon. This was the first time all season the Huskies have played a game that resulted in a draw, while this was the seventh time for Lethbridge in 12 games.
The Huskies enter a bye-week before returning the following week with their final two games of the 2024 season, both at home against Mount Royal and Calgary.

HUSKIES WOMEN’S HOCKEY:
The Huskies women’s hockey team kicked off their season on the road Friday night in Regina for the first meeting in the U-Prairie Challenge over the weekend. Kahlen Wisener scored on a power-play late in the second period for the first goal of the season and a Huskies 1-0 lead that was erased with a game-tying goal halfway through the third period from Regina, forcing overtime. Over three minutes in Regina would score the game-winning goal for a 2-1 victory.
Saturday night the Huskies returned home for their home opener against Regina in what was a close match the entire game, but Kaitlyn Gilory would score the lone goal for Regina in the third period lifting the Cougars to a 1-0 win and sweeping the U-Prairie Challenge. Despite the two losses for Saskatchewan, both games were solid performances as they will look for their first win of the season this weekend as they welcome the Calgary Dinos for a pair of games.

HUSKIES MEN’S HOCKEY:
The hype was real for the Huskies Men’s Hockey team as they opened their season with convincing back-to-back victories against the Regina Cougars during the U-Prairie Challenge. Friday night the Huskies played in front of 1,600 fans at Merlis Belsher Place as they rode a four-goal first period towards a 7-1 victory with six different Huskies finding the back of the net. Dawson Holt led the way with four points on the night. A full recap from Friday can be found HERE.
Saturday night was much of the same for Saskatchewan as they opened the game with a 3-1 lead after the first period that included Logan Bairos finding the net twice, including his first Canada West Goal as well as former Blades captain Trevor Wong scoring his first goal of the season. Bairos would eventually complete the hat-trick while Jarrett Penner and Landon Kosior also found the back of the net in Saskatchewan’s 6-2 victory to complete the weekend sweep over Regina.
The Huskies hit the road to Calgary this weekend for what’s expected to be a tough two-game weekend against the Dinos.
