One of the members of the Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee, Carol Brons, the mother of Dayna Brons who died in the bus tragedy in 2018, says she is thrilled to finally have shovels in the ground for a permanent memorial at the site of the accident at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335.
A news release from the City of Humboldt and the Memorials Committee says site preparation began today (Mon) after the sod turning ceremony on Saturday. The first phase is the creation of pathways and a sitting area over the next few weeks. Phase 2 will be the memorial monument in honour of the 16 who lost their lives and the 13 whose lives were changed forever. The site is 170 kilometres northeast of Humboldt near Tisdale.
Committee members Carol Brons, Kurt Leicht, Ed Tobin, and Bernie Boulet worked diligently in cooperation with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways & Infrastructure, the Water Security Agency, RM of Connaught, CN Rail, and SaskPower to ensure the design is respectful and meaningful while meeting all safety requirements. Kurt Leicht, father to Jacob Leicht, who was killed in the crash, thanks Kirsch Construction, WestCrete, Paramount Paving, and everyone who contributed in making the project a reality.
