While standing in front of the pumps at a Saskatoon gas station, the NDP Candidate for Saskatoon-Meewasin confirmed that the party would scrap the provincial gas tax for six months if elected.
Nathaniel Teed says the move would save the average Saskatchewan family $300 a year, or $10-$15 each time they fill up.
He regrets that the NDP can’t do anything to lower gas prices this long weekend, as many people are traveling to a Thanksgiving meal.
“We know that these gas prices are going to mean, for a lot of folks, that that opportunity might be outside their budget. We think a lot of folks, when they see these gas prices, are going to choose just to stay home.”
The average price of regular gas in Saskatchewan is 148.2 cents per litre, which is second cheapest among the provinces.
On January 19, 2024, the NDP launched the No Moe Gas Tax campaign, attempting to get the Sask. Party to axe the tax for at least six months, however, it was to no avail.
Following the first six months of axing the tax, Teed says a review will be conducted to find new ways to provide ways to provide cost of living relief.
The party recently released a fully-costed platform that suggests it will be able to achieve a $57.1-million surplus by 2028-29. The two main expenditures in the budget are healthcare and education. The document anticipates revenue growth of about four per cent each year, while expenditures are anticipated to increase by 2.7 per cent.
