The Saskatoon Blades got a small measure of revenge Saturday from the Warriors winning the W-H-L’s Eastern Conference final over the Bridge City Bunch back in May – with a Moose Jaw product playing a big role in the Blue and Gold’s 2-0 victory.
Rowan Calvert (pictured) broke the ice on a scoreless game, 47 seconds into the third period on a power play, improving the Blades’ start to the season to a league-best 6-1-1 record. It was the 19-year-old’s sixth goal of the season, his third game-winner and his third man-advantage tally – all tops on the Saskatoon roster. Ben Riche added an empty-net goal while Evan Gardner made 20 saves for his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career. His best save came seconds before Riche added the insurance marker when he slid across to his right to deny Brayden Yager’s one-time shot from the left wing circle. For a second straight night, the Bridge City Bunch overcame a slow start and clamped down on the opposition offence as the Blue and Gold out-shot the 3-4-1 Warriors 32-20 overall – and 30-14 over the final two periods. The Blades finish their current four-game homestand on Tuesday when they host the Regina Pats at 7 o’clock at SaskTel Centre. Following are the audio highlights, Post-Game interviews with head coach Dan Da Silva, defenceman and captain Ben Saunderson – who played in his 200th career game – and veteran left winger Tyler Parr.
