A prescribed fire is taking place as long as conditions are optimal from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today in the Beaver Creek Conservation Area, Brightwater Science and Environmental Centre, the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Dundurn property, and Cranberry Flats Conservation Area.
A joint news release from the Meewasin Valley Authority and the Canadian Prairie Fire Exchange says safety is the top priority, so fires will only proceed under optimal conditions, with strict safety protocols in place including fire guards, water supplies, and a team of trained professionals, including wildland firefighters on site.
Meewasin uses prescribed fire as a tool and some of the objectives include native grassland restoration, invigoration of native species, increased biodiversity, and invasive species management.
