An October 12 chemical spill east of Regina has the RCMP investigating into whether there is a criminal element to the incident.
In the pre-dawn hours of October 12, White Butte RCMP received a report of a chemical spill on Highway 46. According to the Saskatchewan RCMP news release, the investigation determined a semi, hauling a belly dump style of trailer, left a business on the service road in Balgonie when it began to spill the fertilizer it was hauling while going south on Highway 46, then onto the Trans-Canada Highway heading east. The semi did not stop and that has led to the RCMP’s investigation into the semi driver’s failure to stop after the spill and determining whether the resulting cost of clean-up constitutes mischief. The Balgonie Fire Department, Ministry of Highways, Ministry of Environment and Regina Bypass responded to, and are managing, the spill and clean-up. They closed the highway for a period of time. The driver and vehicle have not been identified, however White Butte RCMP is asking for public assistance with this matter. Anyone who saw the semi spilling fertilizer on Highway 46 between 5:15 and 5:45 a.m. on October 12, or if you might have captured security or dashcam video of the spill, you are urged to contact White Butte RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
