The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre has launched the Light it Up Campaign. Laurie O’Connor Executive Director said, “We’ve seen a year over year increase, when I looked at October’s numbers, of about 25 per cent. And so, that’s a big increase for sure. I know across the country in many other provinces it’s much worse but that does put a big strain on the resources that we have and of course that’s just too many people who need to use the food bank.”
There are a variety of ways to help. “Of course when you’re out grocery shopping you can always put one of the most wanted items into the bin. All those foods who pack a nutritional punch are most welcomed. Our website has an easy donate now page where you can go and make a financial contribution or you can drop buy and visit us for a few moments and drop off a cheque or you can sign up to volunteer,” O’Connor explained.
On their web page the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre says in the last fiscal year 130,7941 kilograms of food was provided to the community through the Emergency Food Hampers. As well, $12,291,739 was put back into the community through the tax clinic and 5,248 kilograms of food grown through our Garden Patch program located in Saskatoon.
