It was bound to eventually happen – the Medicine Hat Tigers won for the first time over the Saskatoon Blades in exactly five years on Tuesday night as the Bengals out-scored the visiting Bridge City Bunch 6-4.
Rookie Markus Ruck scored to break a 4-4 tie with 2:09 remaining in the third period to end a 15-game, head-to-head, losing skid for the Tigers against the Blue and Gold – seven of those setbacks coming at home. Markus Ruck and 16-year-old twin brother Liam Ruck accounted for four goals and three assists as Medicine Hat took advantage of Saskatoon’s rare show of lack of discipline. The Bengals scored three power play goals on six chances while the Blades were one-for-two on the man advantage. The Tigers never trailed but, despite being out-shot 43-18, the Bridge City Bunch were able to battle back three times to knot the score before succumbing, extending their winless streak to three games. Jordan Martin, Zach Olsen, Ben Riche and Brandon Lisowsky tallied for the Blue and Gold while Misha Volotovskii added a pair of assists. Riche’s goal came on a penalty shot that started the Blades’ third rally of the night from a 4-2 deficit. Saskatoon is back in action Wednesday when they visit the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
