The University of Saskatchewan Huskies started off 2025 on the right note, scoring three straight on their way to a 3-1 victory over the University of Regina Cougars. After going winless in their first 14 games, the Huskies have won their last three in a row to make the Canada West East Division playoff race a little more interesting.
Shelby Williamson opened the scoring for Saskatchewan with her first goal of the season, deflecting McKenna Bolger’s point shot past Cougar goalie Arden Kliewer just past the eight minute mark of the first period. Shortly after, Bronwyn Boucher slapped home a rebound on the power-play to extend the Huskie lead to 2-0. The goal was Boucher’s fifth of the season and fourth on the power-play. Colby Wilson was excellent in goal all night, turning away all seven shots in the first period and 32 altogether.
Regina came out flying in the second period outshooting the Huskies 14-3, with Saskatchewan bending at times but never breaking. Avery Gottselig scored her first career Canada West goal with just under four minutes left in the middle frame, sending a weak shot towards the net and getting a lucky bounce as Kliewer would deflect the puck up past her head and into the net. Megan Long would inject some life into Regina, scoring a power-play goal with seven seconds left in the middle frame, but wouldn’t be enough as the Huskies closed out the third period despite being outshot 12-6 in the third period and 33-16 overall.
Both teams get set for a rematch in the U-Prairie Challenge tomorrow night, this time down Highway 11 and in the Queen City as the Huskies look for back-to-back weekend sweeps for the first time this season.
