Saturday night was likely the final time this season that the Huskies and Cougars took to the ice against one another as Regina falls further outside the playoff race and Saskatchewan jumps back into a tie for first place in the East Division all thanks to a 7-2 victory. Tonight marked the fourth straight win for Saskatchewan over Regina this season with a clean sweep of the U-Prairie Challenge, even though it didn’t look like that to start.
The Huskies fell into an early 1-0 hole in the first period. Kolton Shindle capitalized with a shot past Roddy Ross, who faced nine shots in the first compared to six by Cougars rookie goaltender Jackson Fellner. The second period would be a completely different story for the Huskies as they killed off an early penalty that led to the game-tying goal from Ty Prefontaine. The Huskies would score two more quick goals as Trevor Wong would twice find Vince Loschiavo extending the lead to 3-1. Just before the halfway mark of the middle-frame, rookie defenseman Adam McNutt would give the Cougars life, cutting the Huskie lead back to just one goal. The pushback from Regina wouldn’t last as Carter Stebbings would score his third power-play goal of the season and sixth overall followed by Chantz Petruic adding onto the Huskie lead capping off a five-goal second period.
Chantz Petruic would add his second goal of the game in the third period, as well as Cade Hayes and the fourth line chipping in offensively making it a 7-2 game, eventually the final score. Regina went 0-for-2 on the power-play while Saskatchewan only cashed in once on four opportunities. Saskatchewan will continue their homestand to start off 2025 next weekend with a pair of games against Manitoba, while Regina will face another tough opponent on the road, the Alberta Golden Bears.
